HISTORY AND CULTURE

St. Bernard Parish has a unique story to tell of the Islenos, or Canary Islanders, who were recruited Spanish colonists from the Canary Islands that arrived in St. Bernard Parish between 1778 and 1783.  Over many generations, and through great difficulties, they have succeeded in preserving their heritage and their language. Visit the Los IsleƱos website, www.losislenos.org, or drive the San Bernardo Scenic Byway for a closer look.

The Battle of New Orleans where the nation was defended against the British in 1815 is reenacted each year at the Chalmette Battlefield. You can tour the National Historical Park and Preserve site throughout the year for more on our historic ties. Click here for more info.
