St. Bernard Parish has a unique story to tell of the Islenos, or Canary Islanders, who were recruited Spanish colonists from the Canary Islands that arrived in St. Bernard Parish between 1778 and 1783.  Over many generations, and through great difficulties, they have succeeded in preserving their heritage and their language.
